How to Dress for an Interview

The dress code in most companies is as diverse as the company itself, therefore it is difficult to select an outfit that would function well in all interviews. What should you do? Do some research and find out how the workers dress and follow their example but dress just little better.

Wear business-like clothing, avoiding bright colours, strong patterns, logos and keep jewellery to a minimal. Wear clothing in which you feel comfortable and don't wear skirts that will ride up when you sit. Carry a beautiful attaché case or folder to contain your CV and samples of your work.

Before you leave home examine yourself in a full-length mirror and have one final look for rips, runs in stockings (carry a spare pair just in case you develop a run along the trip) and buttons that are ready to come off. A few additional points:

1. Wear a stylish suit or elegant fitted pieces. Make sure they fit properly and don't remove the jacket during the interview (don't laugh, I witnessed this happen).

2. Prepare your clothing for the interview the night before and test it on. Don't leave anything to chance.

3. If you are not wearing a jacket but prefer to wear something more casual long sleeves are a necessity. Sleeveless clothing should not be worn in a professional setting and definitely not during an interview.

4. Always wear hosiery and avoid wearing sandals.

5. It has been said that you can determine how wealthy someone is by looking at their shoes; it seems that shoes are the last investment. Wear shoes with a closed toe and closed heel for an interview or business meeting, and keep them shining without nicked heels or scruffy toes.

6. Take good care of your hair. A good haircut is essential for making a good first impression.

7. Stand tall with your shoulders back and carry yourself with confidence. Portray a successful image by paying attention to details - tastefully done cosmetics, the finest clothes you can buy and being prepared for the interview.

When you are prepared for the interview, which includes understanding the job you have applied for, knowing your resume and how you suit that position, your self-confidence will become evident. Taking care of how you appear will offer you one less thing to worry about so you can focus on marketing your talents.

Don't forget to smile!!
